BEEYOND HONEYBEES

Conservation campaigns face the challenge of turning knowledge into action, and the same is true when it comes to “save the bees”. However, let me bring your attention to a second challenge: the honeybee hegemony. When the average person thinks and
talks about bees, they usually mean a specific species, the honeybee Apis mellifera. Thus, reducing the diversity of the 4,000 species of bees in the United States to one introduced species.
CHALLENGING THE POLAR BEAR

Big, deep, dark eyes. White fur mixed with the few clouds in the sky. A baby cub stands nearby. Around them, a never-ending blue ocean. A glacier in the background sets the landscape. Mom and baby bear sit on the piece of ice. This terrible yet magical moment is eternalized by the powerful lenses of a camera. This scene is the classic image associated with climate change, perpetuated on the cover of magazines. Which brings up the question: is telling the story of the polar bear family the right way of educating people?

Henry Nathan Pollack, a Nobel Prize laureate, member of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC), acclaimed author, and professor emeritus at the University of Michigan is one great example of a man who combines scientific knowledge with the abilities of a great communicator. “[Pollack is] a scientist with the rare ability to engage ordinary people and to translate a scientific idea into everyday terms that are easy to understand,” wrote Al Gore in Pollack’s book A World Without Ice.
